Moonshine is sunburned

I realize it’s hard to tell from this picture but my poor horse Moonshine came to the barn today with a touch of sunburn on her pink nose. She’s almost entirely black (as is Valentine) but has this pink area on her nose with a little white hair over it. And today it was pink. Our pasture area is probably 40% wooded and there is an old barn that’s open on two sides. But apparently they’re spending enough time in the sun to warrant sunscreen. And that brings me to these questions:

  1. Should I apply sunscreen to sensitive pink areas on my horse?
  2. If so, what kind? I haven’t seen any horse sunscreens. What do you guys use?

Here’s the picture:

Cute nose! I was told you can use regular sunscreen on horses. Since it’s a small area, splurge on waterproof. I’d use cheap stuff if you were doing the whole horse.

I live in TX and seeing as it is curently 104 degrees outside this is something I am familiar with. My horse also has a white snip on her nose that will blister and peel if I’m not careful. I have solved this problem in two ways: 1. I cover her white parts with copperton 50 spf for babies that is a spray on gel. Be careful what you use they can be allergic. Use only waterproof stuff for babies. 2. We keep her in with fans in her stall during day and turn her out only at night. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the comments guys! I should have mentioned in the post that it’s been over 100 here off and on for the past few days. It’s supposed to be as high as 106 tomorrow! I will stop and get some waterproof high-spf kids sunscreen tomorrow.

Please keep the comments coming though!

My horse Curly can also get a little pink on his nose. Waterproof baby sunblock seems to do the trick. And as my daughter has been doing the round of horse shows in our area, I’ve noticed that most people seem to have a bottle or two of baby sunblock in their trailer tack rooms. My hunch is that the stuff is used for more than just kids’ noses!

A good waterproof coverage that is very effective for preventing sunburn on horses is Desitin – the kind you use for diaper rash.

Thanks you guys. We picked up some baby Coppertone spray, SPF50. She doesn’t like the spray sound but it’s quick. And it makes her smell so good!
