Wow, Tara, that is quite a big job you have made for yourself. It sounds just like what we did - we were advised to get an older, well-trained, docile horse, and went and fell in love with a totally inappropriate horse. And we did it twice. Oh well. We love our horses anyway and it sounds like you do too.

If there is any way at all you can do it, you should find a trainer for your horse. Since he has never been ridden, you're going to want to train him correctly from the beginning. As far as what you're doing on the ground, though, in my completely inexpert opinion it sounds like what you're doing is really great. The most important thing for your horse is to trust you, and up there too is communication between you and your horse. Keep doing what you're doing. Please get expert help, though, before you get up on his back!

Good luck, and please let us know how things are going!

I'm in the same boat. My horse was a show horse, so he should be a well-behaved horse, but he's pretty fiery. What I want to do is have one of my horse friends come over and spend a few hours showing me what and what not to do. I've had a couple of people say, "Yeah, I should come on over and do that"...but they don't follow through. Or maybe I don't follow through. But in any case, I think a new horse owner's best bet is to have someone who knows what they're doing spend some time with you and your horse so you really get a feel for the way things should go. A trainer is probably the best choice, if you can afford that route. Otherwise, make some good horse buddies. Good luck!

Want to know a secret? We've got 25 draft posts in queue here at ourfirsthorse.com. Some are mere titles to jog our memory about an idea for a good post and some almost ready to go. We usually have no problem coming up with ideas to write about but often experience a delay while looking for a picture to go along with the post. We have TONS of pictures but sometimes it's hard finding the right one. For instance, Bill has a post ready to go today except for the picture. He wants to use a picture of a nose (you'll get it when you read the post). But we're having trouble coming up with a picture of just a human nose. We could find one on Google images but we certainly don't want to steal anyones picture. So we're looking to buy some stock photo cds.

Just thought you'd like some insight into what goes on behind the scenes of the website.

It was nice having Labor day off to catch up on chores. Fortunately for us, our hay supplier asked if we were up to getting some hay this morning. Yeah! We were pretty low and really needed it. We ended up spending the day getting about 70 square bales onto our car trailer (16 foot) and hanging out with some horse friends. And here I am at 10 PM, completely worn out, itchy (hay sure is scratchy) and stiff. I think I need to get out and work more, lol.

How was your Labor Day holiday? Do anything with horses?

So true, if the horse doesn't care why should anyone else.

For the record, I don't like "Moonshine" because it just doesn't fit her. It's a cute name, but she just needs something more girly - she's very graceful, feminine, pretty - Moonshine just doesn't work. But since it's been 4 months and we haven't come up with anything else, it's starting to stick. Where did you get "Mushu?" It's cute.

I have to ask - you said: "haha, don’t get me started on “flakes” of hay or “alfalfa”, the names make me giggle!" - what's funny about those? I know we have some giggles over Aussie and UK stuff ("shag" for one - we have shag carpet here, or did in the 70's, so that one just cracks us up). But I don't know why alfalfa would do it for you (although I have to admit, it's just a funny word).

Thanks for posting here! It's great to hear from you. Keep it coming!

Thanks for the note! Wow, 17 hands - that's big. A thoroughbred too - spunky.

It's neat to see someone from outside the US checking out our site. I guess much of what we're going through applies anywhere you are, even though our terms and prices vary. You're always welcome here and I hope we can get into some good discussions as more people start posting in the forum. I've got lots of stuff to post about. I still need to introduce our other horse "Moonshine". Mikki doesn't like that name because it's slang for homebrewed liquor here but I think it's funny. Her official fancy horse name is moon-something, I can never remember. So I just call her moonshine and she doesn't seem to mind :-).

Thanks for visiting our site!
