An upcoming post here at OurFirstHorse.com is going to be about “horse toys”. I’d love to hear suggestions on toys that have worked for you and your horse.

I’ve been wondering about horse toys and activities. I’d like to know what other people do!

It’s on the list! We’ve done some experimenting and got some interesting results. I can’t wait to post about it!

I’m on small acreage with a lot of horses so my horses have to get rotated outside so I use toys a lot. Almost all of my herd play with a jolly ball in their stall. I also use the soft rubber type feed tubes for grain and they play with those as well. Old rubber boots are great toys too. I have tried the apple treats things that hang from the ceiling but they’re not all that interested in those if it’s the apple by itself but the two part one with the apple on top and the ball hanging underneath is a pretty big hit with the boys. But you have to watch it because the ball wants to come unscrewed and once it’s off it’s hard to get back on. In the field I have those big plastic blue barrels. The boy horses and the young ones like to play with those. They roll them around, jump them, all kinds of things.

Thanks for that note! I’m still working on this post about toys but suffice it to say, we’re not having much luck. Maybe we just need to find the right toys.

What blue plastic barrels do you mean? Are they especially made for horses, or did you just find some old barrels? because we have some of those. :-)

Sorry it took me so long to reply to this, I didn’t think to look before now. Actually, I bought the barrels at the feed store for about $10 a piece. They are are large maybe about waist high drums. There are also some half that size that a friend of mine has, I’d like to have some of those too.

They are tough! I have 3, I originally bought them for obstacles to school for trail classes. I leave my trail stuff set up in one of my fields and the horses love to play with all of the stuff. They pick up the poles and move them, play on the bridge, toss the cones and that’s how I discovered they like to play with the barrels. It’s not just great for the horses but a kick to watch. If I can ever figure out how to post video on my blog, I have footage of a gelding and his barrel games.

Well that’s cool! I’ll have to throw one of my barrels out there one day and see what happens.

I’d love to see your video.

I work with a lady who owned a horse farm…. she said that the tall thin cones that the construction companies use on the road ways are great for horses…. she suggested I go on an midnight cone run some time to get them
