I loved this video! I made my husband watch it with me too! Well, we went to a rodeo the other night and that horse fever is back in me. We live on an acreage in a rural area, but we both commute and don’t have trailers, barns, fence, horse experience, or anything else that might make horse ownership possible at our home. There is a neighbor with some teenage girls who have a few horses. I asked their dad if he might consider letting his girls board a horse for me and apparently, they’re pretty excited about the idea. I’m trying to check out prices online but it’s so hard to find price for a situation like this. It would be a pasture board and they grow and cut their own hay. They don’t board any other horses and there would be nothing fancy about the deal, but they’d basically feed and water my horse, along with their horse, and get the vet to check him out with he’s there for their horses. I’m liking the idea because it’s 1 mile down the road, would give me someone to ride with, give me confidence that if something was wrong with my horses health that it would be noticed, and I would be helping a local family. But-question is, what’s a reasonable price? We live in Nebraska (because all sites say, it matters where you live) and there’s nothing “urban” about here, so that shouldn’t be a reason for price to be high. I’d appreciate any thing anybody would have to say and thank you Bill and Mikki for your posts. I’ve been a dedicated reader for over 3 years now and I feel like I’ve learned a lot for you both!
Thanks for the note and good luck! It’s been a while since you posted this (darn forum software doesn’t let me see just new posts) so you’ve probably already made up your mind but I would say you’re in a good position to negotiate since they’re not experienced boarders and it doesn’t sound like you’re in high competition area. I’d have a figure in mind and then ask them what they think is reasonable. A lot will depend on what you want them to do. For example, if you just want them to board the horse but not feed or clean up after it, the price should obviously be lower. But being teenagers, they probably would love the opportunity to make a little more by feeding and cleaning up after your horse and they’re doing it for their own horses anyway. I bet they’re not sure where to begin with price either.
If you’re still checking the forum, how did this turn out for you?
