Walking the walking horse

I thought Valentine was limping a little when I let him out of the barn this morning. As I watched him throughout the morning, it seemed to me something was wrong. Although he is more of a loner, this morning he wasn’t eating when I put out hay and he just stood there next to the other horses looking sad. And he seemed to be standing funny but it’s hard to tell with him. He’s such a big Walking Horse, with dominant hips. Worried, I haltered him, walked him up the muddy hill to the barn, and hosed off his feet and legs while he ate grass in my back yard while I had a look. Everything seemed normal. So I dragged him away from the yummy grass and took him for a walk down the street. It’s not the first time. In fact, I do it pretty frequently to exercise the horses and to keep them familiar with things that otherwise might spook them, like the neighbors barking dogs, cars and tree stumps. After a nice walk I was able to determine that he’s walking normal and there is no swelling and no visible lacerations. Maybe he was just still from being in the barn all night. He drank a normal amount of water, ate all of his overnight hay and his poop looked okay. After returning him to the barn for further observation, I noticed he was eating hay, though I gave him the best we had.
I did notice it’s time for a hoof trim and some new shoes. I want to check into those shoes that are slip-resistant on pavement, too. The street in front of our house has some elevation and Valentine seemed to slip a little on the smooth pavement.
So do you take your horse for walks down the street?
I occasionally take my Arab for a short walk. It’s about 1/4th mile from my house, to the main pasture gate and back. I don’t do it often. I’d rather she did all the work. I usually ride her instead.
I don’t walk a horse, but you should see the monster that drags me around. There’s a good reason for calling her Pepper.
Ah yes, I know the beast of which you speak. I have been led around by her myself.
Hi Guys,
I’m so relieved to hear that Valentine is ok.
I didn’t do much walking of my horse before my accident, except to take her from the barn/paddock to the arena or round pen.
I expect that I’ll be taking my mare for walks long before I can ride her, once the Dr. gives the ok. It will probably be good physical therapy for me, too.
I had my knee reconstructive surgery yesterday, so now all I gotta do is move past the pain and get to healing.
I’m trying to stop thinking about the “what if’s”, like, what if my foot hadn’t snagged up in the stirrup, I’d only have a few bruises instead of these huge obstacles to work through now.
Thanks for the nice comments you left for me on my blog, too. I really appreciate it.

I have a miniature horse, and I live smack in the middle of the city(but we live on a nice big plot of land). I walk Turbo down the street all the time, it helps him get used to all the city noises. It’s also good exercise for me (he tends to walk me
, and I get alot of suprised stares from neighbors who aren’t used to seeing a horse walk down the street. I’ve found it also helps his hooves wear down evenly(that doesn’t replace regular trimmings though, it just helps cut down on how often I have the farrier out).
Wow! Its been a long time since I’ve been here. Its good to see you are still blogging.
Yes. I do occasionally walk my horses. Its good exercise for me
and a great time with them, where I’m not putting any real demands on them. The only demand being to walk with me (not in front of me or lagging behind) quietly and respectfully.
Some horse people might think it strange to walk our horses instead of riding them, but to me its like taking a walk with friends. Of course riding is super fun too.
YES YES YES! I do walk my horse! LOL…I thought I was the only one! I know my neighbors think I am being Silly, but I get my exercise and get them use to being out of their pasture.
The first year I had my horse, my first horse, I lost my confidence on him. I started walking, jogging him for several miles 4 or 5 days a week. My horse was a present from my boyfriend who still jokingly says, “You walk that horse so much, I should have gotten you a dog!” My horse and I did find professional help and we ride around with confidence now!
yes i walk my hores all the time it’s lovely to be able to walk her becaue she is lovely and she always looks after me so i look after her.
