A Plethora of Horses…and Not Enough Time

We have been SO busy here the last few weeks. We’ve been traveling, on business and pleasure; the Kid is back in school; Bill and I have both been busy with work; and countless chores (e.g., fence and barn repair – thanks, Cash!) are eating up our time.

On top of that, for about 2 months, I’ve been having problems with my right foot. It has been sore on the ball of my foot right where it rests in the stirrup. I finally went to a podiatrist and she diagnosed it as a Morton’s neuroma. I’ve had 2 shots of cortisone and it’s improved a bit, but it’s still sore enough to make riding unpleasant. So the result of all these things together is that we have four horses in the pasture that are not being ridden. And the weather is getting cooler…it’s the perfect time to ride, ever so briefly, and there’s not a thing we can do about it. :( So frustrating!

So that’s where we’ve been. What’s up with you all? I’m sure you’re spending your cooler fall days and trail rides, or at the last of the horse shows of the season, getting all kinds of riding in before it gets too cold. We’re so jealous.

About Mikki

Born and raised in Arizona...lived in the city for 25 years after growing up. Moved to a tiny little town in east Tennessee in 2005 and somehow ended up with 5 dogs, 2 cats, 4 chickens, 3 goats and, of course, 4 horses. Lovin' the country life!

I’ve found a Versatility Ranch Horse instructor and took my first lesson today. I’ve got LH on Mare Magic and it’s making a big difference. I have the mellowest Little Horse now. (http://www.valleyvet.com/calming-agents/Mare-Magic)And it smells good too!

The last gymkhana of the season is Oct. 4th. Looking forward to it!

Hope Mikki’s foot is better soon!

I’m glad to see that I am not the only one with the “no time to ride” blues. I got a saddle repaired and it was returned on Labor Day. I have not ridden my horse since. kinda stinks. Good luck with the fence.

Hi – I stumbled across your site quite some time back but have never left a comment. I do however check it weekly as I love to hear of your adventures. My husband and myself are first time horse owners and we too are up to our eyeballs in horses for new owners as we also have 4 of them. What a ride it is, but we love every minute of it! Glad to see you guys are back and everythings ok! Love the site!

Hi! I’m new to this blog but I am so sorry about your swollen foot! I hope it gets better and you were right! It is the perfect time to go riding. I was at my barn recently and I hope you can ride ASAP!

  6. Mikki says:

Thank you all for your encouragement. Susan, I’m so sorry about your feet! You poor thing! I hadn’t checked comments for a while so you must have had your surgery – how did it go?

  7. Elizabeth P. says:

Hey Susan! I am terribly sorry about your poor foot! I
hope it gets better asap! I agree that frustration can occurr while not being able to ride, and yes, with a hurt foot, riding would be painful.

    Hi,
I’m an avid reader of your blog because we hope to get our own place soon so we can keep our horse at “home.”

Is riding in stirrups what causes Mortons N…? Could you ride in a bareback pad w/o stirrups?

Hope you are back to riding soon!

    Hi Mikki,
It’s been a while since I have been to your site. You have two more horses since I last visited.
I have had times like that. I have been doing really good lately because I now have a ridding buddy. My neighbor and I have been riding a lot more together.

I am sure you will be back in the saddle soon enough. If you can’t go riding just spend some time with them. I love to just hang out with my horses with the intention of just hanging out. If you have playful horses you may be able to get a game going. The riding part of our relationship with our horse is just a small part ;o).

Don’t be too discouraged. It happens to all of us.
