Romeo wins at the rodeo!

Romeo participated in a youth rodeo this past weekend and placed 1st, 2nd and 4th in a few competitions. The competition was pretty good but in the end Romeo and his rider were apparently better in the mud (it rained one day). Of course the ribbons go with the rider but we’re proud of both the rider and our appaloosa. It’s neat having a horse already trained for barrels and poles. Now we just need to train his new rider (I’m working on it)!
I went one of the two rodeo nights and snapped some pictures but since the competitions happened after dark and I was using a long lense on my camera, most of the pictures came out too blurry. (BTW, the picture above is just one I snapped at the event. That’s not Romeo. He doesn’t do roping…yet)

Okay, so how many of you do the rodeo shows or barrels or pole bending? If not, do you want to? I haven’t seen any “gymkana” events here in east Tennessee but I know Laura out in Colorado has been active in that this year. She’s even been on a cattle drive!
Go Romeo!
I LOVE gymkhanas! I just went to one last weekend. We did keyhole and poles. We didn’t stick around for barrels because it was just too hot at 95 degrees. The fun thing is that it’s non-competitive, cheap and just about anyone that can ride can do it.
Now Bill needs to ride Romeo in a gymkhana!
How does one find out about local gymkhanas? I’d love to participate in one. I’m in the NW corner of North Carolina.
Yeah, Laura. Is there some kind of association or something?
I’ve found out the ones I go to through word of mouth (ask at tack or feed stores), internet searches, or fliers at stores. I just found out about another one at the gymkhana I went to last weekend.
P.S. What is this mud you speak of?
Oh, do we love gymkana in Michigan!! Anytime, anyplace, anywhere we’ll be there. If you can’t find a show, put one on. It’s fun and easy, all you need are barrels, poles, a tape measure and a timer. Timers are expensive but if you love it you can afford it, somehow. Like they say, build it and they will come!! Great money maker, you could pay for that timer in no time. Just put out a few flyers and the word travels fast. Try it, you’ll like it.
i have always wanted to start barrel racing, finally got a horse now me and him are training together. i still dont really no how to and i wish i could find someone to help me lol. but one day i will start to rodeo..
