It Was Bound to Happen

…and it did. One of us got kicked by a horse. Yep, it would be me who had the trail-riding mishap again. There have been numerous close calls with horse hooves, but until now we’ve escaped harm. I wasn’t so lucky on our otherwise-idyllic trail ride on Saturday. (More on that, with pictures, later.)
First, I have to say that it was pretty much my fault. There were seven of us on the trail ride, with seven very different horses: two Tennessee Walkers (our Cash and Shari’s still-unnamed horse); our Appaloosa, Romeo; and four Quarter Horses (Katy, Cluless [not a typo], Rabbit and Pistol). I was riding Cash and we stopped for a break. My saddle had shifted back (forgot the darn breast collars) so I got off and started adjusting it. Dummy me, we were standing next to Shari’s very young mare, Pistol, and I was in between. I don’t know what happened - I assume Cash sniffed her nose or some other grievous offense - and Pistol let a hoof fly. I was obviously in the line of fire. I thank the good Lord that I was facing away from Pistol, so her hoof caught the back of my calf, not the bony front - otherwise, I’d have a cast on my leg now, and possibly pins in it too, instead of a very large, colorful and painful bruise.
Purty, huh. It knocked me down too. I tell you, I’m spending much too much time picking myself up off the ground on trail rides these days. Hey, at least I didn’t fall off this time! And again, Cash avoided stepping on me. He could easily have backed up, away from Pistol and over me, but instead chose to walk in front of the scary mare. I love that horse.
Once again, I remind you - having horses around is dangerous. Y’all be careful out there.
WOW! That’s some bruise. Thanks again for the reminder to always be aware. I am so used to the horses I ride with, I trust them not to kick (although you never know.) However, next month I am riding with horses I do not know and it reminded me to be extra cautious!
That mare lived up to her name, eh? Pistol!
Sorry to hear about your mishap. Last February, my barn buddy asked me to go for a “quick” ride with her. It was a sunny, brisk February day. No snow on the ground, but the ground was frozen hard. I was in a hurry, and I didn’t do that second check of my tack. We were halfway down a dirt driveway, and my quarterhorse spooked at something, and he tossed me off. I fell on the hard ground and broke 3 ribs. The pain was almost unbearable. I was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. I learned a “hard” lesson. No matter how quick you want to mount up, double check your tack and make sure everything is nice and snug.
Sorry to her about you being kicked. I know exactly what you are going through. Being new to horses myself I knew evenually I would get kicked. Well it happened to me over the 4th of July weekend. We were camping with some friends and went to go hobble our horses. I hobble Snickers first with no problems. Then I went to hobble Shadow and I got a little careless because that had been doing so well with it. I was bent down and not really paying any attention to his back feet and the next thing I know I feel this thump on my forehead. It wasn’t his fault he was kicking at a fly and my head was in the way. I ended up with a large knot on my forehead for the rest of the trip. It could have been a lot worse and I was really luck. It was a good reminder to me to not get to comfortable with my horse. I am glad to hear that you are ok. I just want to let you know that enjoy your site. It is nice to see thing for the beginners point of view.
Whew! I’m just so relieved that it was just a bruised leg and not a broken one! I’m so glad you’re ok.
I’ve been very very cautious abut riding my horse since we got her because my husband’s new job’s insurance plan doesn’t start until August and I’m terrified of getting seriously hurt without insurance!
But your injury just goes to show that just BEING AROUND horses can be dangerous and to neve let your guard down for a second.
Thanks for the reminder, although painful :O
I am glad you weren’t seriously hurt. I have no horses of my own at the moment but I’m thinking of getting riding lessons. What happened to you makes me feel aware of how dangerous a horse is. I hope your bruise will disappear soon.
Wow i just got my cast off I got kicked too, but it was a gelding. Hope you feel better!!!!
My horse’s birthday is on the 29th he is so SPOILED he is getting a cake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
