Not Everybody’s An Expert, Okay?

Many times over the last few weeks I have felt that horse ownership is not for beginners. Seriously – I think that people who have horses or supply horse stuff don’t even consider that horse stuff might possibly be used by someone who hasn’t always had horses. This is one of those times. I got the bridle/halter combo today, and it came in a big Ziploc bag. No pictures, no instructions, nothing. Here’s what I have to work with:

Jeez.
Let me just tell you, even the experianced still mess up bridle construction lol..I cant tell you how many experianced horse people I have seen out the bit on upside down or inside out.
This also might have some bearing on the way Val behaved for you on your first ride. Have you ridden since then? Did you find out what bit the old owner used on this horse? He may not know how to respond to a new bit if he hasnt been trained to it
In that case I would purchase a similar bit to what he is used to.
I so know what you mean! I did the same thing, I sent off for a bridle/halter set up and a bit. When it all came in I wasn’t sure how to put it together, no pictures, no anything! I fretted that I had the bit in upside down or backwards or something. I had a friend who is experienced check it for me. By the way, I ride a TWH Mare. Does your TWH rack?
Kathy, I’m so glad it wasn’t just me. Lucky you could have someone check it for you. I had a horse-expert friend over to ride Moonshine, and offered my bridle for her use. She took one look at it and said, “Ummm…that’s okay, I’ll use mine.”
I don’t think my horse racks but I couldn’t tell you for sure. He was a show horse on the TWH circuit (not flat-shod) for about a year, then suspended for rule violations (I don’t have any details about that). He was sold to the guy I bought him from, who had him for about a year and used him only as a trail horse. None of my friends have walkers so don’t know how to put him through his paces, so to speak. I need to find a TWH friend, I guess.
